Energy optimization and freecooling: reducing consumption with a new cooling system

Context and objective

Energy efficiency is a key element in reducing operating costs and environmental impact in industrial processes. One of the main drivers of consumption is plant cooling, which often relies on energy-intensive systems.

The goal of this intervention was to reduce electricity consumption by taking advantage of a freecooling solution. This system allows outside air to be used when its temperature is lower than that of chilled water, reducing the workload of the chillers and optimizing consumption.

The intervention

The company has implemented a solution that provides:

1

Replacement of existing air-cooled chillers

The old systems were decommissioned and replaced with a new, more efficient system.

2

Installation of a freecooling system

This system allows outside air to be used directly for cooling, reducing the need for compressors.

3

Adoption of a new high-efficiency chiller

The installed air-cooled chiller ensures better energy performance and lower consumption impact.

The investment for the intervention was €130,000, with a measurable economic return through the energy savings and incentives obtained.

Results and benefits

The implementation of the new system has resulted in significant savings in energy consumption:

Reduction of 120,000 Sm³/year of methane

Equivalent to economic savings of about 40,000 €/year.

Savings of €5,000/year on electricity consumption

Thanks to the optimization of cooling

Achievement of 87 TEE/year

Providing an additional economic benefit.

Economic and operational impact

Optimization of energy costs

Reduction in annual plant cooling expenses.

Lower environmental impact

Decrease in methane consumption and associated CO₂ footprint.

Operational efficiency

The new system provides better temperature control and greater reliability of the production process.

Incentives and return on investment

The TEEs obtained represent an additional source of economic recovery.

The adoption of the freecooling system, together with the replacement of chillers, has resulted in a significant reduction in energy consumption, with both economic and environmental benefits. This intervention demonstrates how optimizing cooling technologies can make a real contribution to sustainability and business competitiveness.
